College Reflection

During my time at college to date I have learnt so much over the past 2 years. Since the first year I have improved on many of these skills which I have built for example using the Adobe programs and learning more and expanding more with my creativity on them for my projects. I have also discovered things such as hyphenation, wrapping text around an image, cutouts, slugs and bleed etc and how important they are. This has been extremely helpful for not only my FMP which I am now confidently starting but for my future as well as I have learnt to discipline myself and my time management which will be a key factor for university next year. I believe my first FMP was also a very big learning point and curve for me during my time at college, understanding what went well and wrong during my first time creating a FMP will definitely help me this time around. Learning how to present myself online has been a huge learning experience too. I have created a portfolio website for universities and job opportunities which includes all my work from college which I have done from the 2nd year. This has helped me keep organised with all my projects and have a place to put them. Overall, I think my time at college has been an amazing experience and I have learnt skills which I will definitely have for life.

 Planning

Above is a inspiration bank I created gathering all sorts of different resources which gave me a creative outlet towards my FMP ideas. Alongside this I also created a mind map in my sketchbook mapping out all my potential ideas for my FMP. Doing this allowed me to explore with all my ideas and find which one I was most interested in pursuing. I picked to create a virtual poetry book because this idea allowed me to incorporate most of the ideas which I enjoy creating the most.

Statement of Intent

To the right is my statement of intent. This is basically an in depth description of my FMP understanding my target audience and the resources I am going to need throughout this project. This includes time management which I have created a time schedule for which you will see below. I listed all the skills which I will need or need to develop more. What equipment I will need and additional resources which will come in to use too.

Pitch

Project Proposal

This is my project proposal outlining in detail what my main idea for my FMP is. As you can see to the right with each section I described:

- Reasoning behind my project

- My concept

- My evaluation

- A Bibliography

This gave me a good outline and understanding of what I need to do and get prepared to reach my deadline. My inspiration for this project mostly came from my love for poetry and photography. I love the concept of having words being contrasted by a picture. There's a quote which says a picture speaks a thousand words and I believe that to be true. Words can be extremely powerful but with a picture alongside I think it can really resonate and speak to people in a completely different way. One of my favourite poets is Rupi Kaur who is also a young poet and became well known via Instagram and Tumblr by posting her short visual poems on these social media sites. She is a much more modern poet than say for example Shakespeare or Charlotte Bronte; however I like her visual approach to things by using illustrations to convey the message of her poems.

For my project I had to create a pitch and present it to my lecturer. The aim behind this pitch is to explain my idea and everything which I will need to consider during my time given timescale. I covered 3 main points

- My concept

- Research

-Experimentation

Pitch Evaluation

The feedback I received after presenting my pitch was to focus on my time management and to create a plan on when I am going to get everything done and on what time. This is to make sure I give myself enough time for the deadline. Due to me creating a hand printed book I need to think about printing time, how long that is going to take and if things get delayed or go wrong. I need to give myself some extra time between then and my deadline, the 13th of may. This is why for my research the very first thing I will look into is printing companies and make sure I have that set in stone before anything else, that will give me a better idea of my time and how long I have to do everything until I need to print. Another part of my feedback was to think about my evaluation at the end of my project, how will I know my project will be a success? To do this I will need to get feedback from not only friends and family but peers and other people who may not know me personally to get an honest opinion and feedback from a different range of people. This will help me to expand on my idea also and bring me more inspiration for my project. My main thing to make sure of is to keep myself disciplined with my time and to keep on top of everything, timing is going to be key.

This is a timeline I created to help me understand when I have to get things done by. This will help me keep organised and on top of things.

Layout and Design

For my layout and design I would like to have a photograph on one side of a double page spread and on the other a poem with either a illustration or just a page filled with text. For my research side of things I am going to have to look into how other poets have presented their poems in a visual format or if they have stuck to the more classical way about things, simply text. Personally I have not yet found a poetry book with the contrast of poems and photographs and I think it would be a more modern version of poetry books today. I decided to play around with layout and design myself in Adobe indesign to get a visual idea of what my pages could look like. This is the outcome.

fmp mock up spread.jpg

For this design which I played around with I put one of my poems onto the right hand side and found a image on splash.com which I thought conveyed the message of the poem well. I gathered a silhouette of google of a mirror because I thought the 'ghost of her past' could reflect herself and all the different versions of herself she has been through, whereas most people would probably interpret the 'ghost' as person from her past. I edited the mirror silhouette on photoshop by using the magic wand tool and exporting it as a PNG to get the transparent background, then overlaying that with the text on top.

Overall during my context side of my FMP project I have come to a final idea about what I will be producing for my FMP - a visual poetry book. I have created a mock up double page spread to get a feel and insight into what my pages will look like inside my book. I pitched my idea to my lecturer and the feedback I got given was to mainly focus on my time management and figure out my timeline before the deadline.
