Product
My product is a double page spread on travelling to college during a global
pandemic and the pros and cons to it. My product will have thorough research and stats included which would have been done via a questionnaire sent to different audiences from different locations however staying within my target audience age 16-19. My main focus will be on the impact and changes coronavirus has had on travelling to college via public transport or just in general. This will hopefully fit into a 2 page spread including:
-
Figures from research ie graphs but in a entertaining and visual way
-
Line graph with colour of underground tube map
-
Train tracks make into a visual line graph
-
Potential interviews
-
Images
-
Map with pinpoints

Printing the newspaper is going to cost money. Thinking about how many copies we may need to print to be able to hand them out around the college and distribute them. Promoting the magazine may also cost money. To try to reach ad’s online to make it reach a wider audience.
Place
Bath college will be the main allocated place the newspaper is targeted to and for students who study there however I want to incorporate different places where people travel to and from as well to make it broader. I think this will give a broader idea and make the article more interesting seeing the difference in effect for people from all around. How we will distribute and allocate the newspaper to people from around Bath College is something we need to figure out how to do. Due to Corona it may be better to hand out the newspapers or place them somewhere outside the college where most of the students are now. With my own article and double page spread inside the magazine I want to add images and photographs of different places people may travel from and where from for example Bristol Temple Meads station. This keeps things local and people will be able to recognise the places and it will hopefully draw them in.

People
Target audience - students at Bath College
We want to make the newspaper relatable and for Bath College students to pick up and read it. Many students at college are 16-19 however we can’t rule out that there are also teachers and older students who study and attend the college. They may also be interested in the newspaper and to have a quick glance through. We are aiming to touch on students' opinions and thoughts towards all topics and issues discussed in our newspaper. For example with my double page spread my main focus will be travelling now during coronavirus and hopefully that will be relevant and people will think how it has affected them if it has or not. It’ll also hopefully allow people to reflect on how things have changed throughout the months. How travelling to college may look differently now than what it may have at the start of the year.

Secondary travel research
With most students now being online traveling seems to be off the radar, however as lockdown restrictions start to ease and schools begin to open. Life seems to be getting back to somewhat normal. So how is this new lifestyle with masks and hand sanisiter's on the go making travel look?
On Friday 17th July, the government made it clear that travelling on public transport was once again allowed. Buses are operating at a lower capacity with around 2 in 4 seats being available with approximately a maximum of 33 people allowed on one bus at a time. Another way buses have made sure capacity stays lower is by having signs posted when a bus is full and has reached the maximum capacity. This is why some buses may drive past you while you're waiting at a bus stop because it cannot take any more passengers on board. It is mandatory to wear a face covering on public transport.
Source :
Trains have increased the number of services running allowing people to be able to maintain a 2 metre distance and avoid overcrowding. Face coverings must be worn inside trains and on the station. Failure to do so may result in a £100 fine. There are limitations on catering for trains.

Students travel with a corona twist
Corona Virus has impacted many peoples lives in many different ways. Travelling being one of them. We all are using different means of transport to reach our final destination. There is no doubt that walking or cycling is the healthiest and most eco friendly type of travel but in reality not everybody has the luxury to do so due to different circumstances. In my survey 29.6% of students travel by foot and only 3.7% by bike. 29.6% of students are using bus services, 11.1% using trains, 18.5% are travelling by their own car.
Has coronavirus made travelling for students more difficult or simpler? In order to answer this question I did a survey in which I questioned students from Bath college and other schools and colleges to answer about the difference between travelling before and during Covid-19. According to my survey, travelling to our destinations feels quite different compared to the start of the year due to all of us being MASKED. and following the rules such as social distancing and so on.
First of all, 44% of students replied that travelling to their place of study is now easier due to less number of people using public transport and less busy roads. Secondly, 56% said that travelling during these times has made it harder for them for a variety of reasons. Some students pointed out that weaning masks makes the journey uncomfortable, public transport timetables have changed leading to less availability, train prices have gone up.
From my research it is clear that most students are either travelling by bus or by foot, travelling feels different and uncomfortable due to the Corona Virus guidelines, especially when being MASKED. I am making a conclusion that the pandemic has definitely made students more aware of how they are travelling.
Finally highlighting the answer to my question is that Corona Virus made travelling harder for 56% of students however it also made it easier for 44%, we can see that the difference between the two percentages is only 8%. Moreover 48.1% of students use eco friendly means of transport including walking and only 33.3% of students travel in the healthiest way.

Potential Photographs

How did I edit and take my pictures?
All of these photos were taken on my phone, I explored and edited with different softwares which I found on the app store. I used photoshop express which I experimented with along with an app called photoshop mix. I mostly edit my pictures with the original editing software which is provided by apple on the phone already however I like to also find other softwares which I can use which are more advanced. I played around with filters which I got from vsco and also edited some photos on vsco as well. In conclusion I tried out many different apps to see which one suited me better. I like my photos to pop with colour as this is my aesthetic and I think it makes the photograph more eye catching especially in a magazine. This is why I like to up my saturation on my images and make them brighter. Putting up the exposure and sharpness also makes the quality of the images look better. Cropping photographs is also something I like to do because I feel like it can get rid of unnecessary background sometimes, I did this with the bottom right hand corner train picture because I didn’t like the background and it made the photo become more of a banner which I wanted.
Promotion
An idea which I thought would be good to promote our magazine was through
tiktok. Tiktok is a very popular app and many people use it to promote small business
or themselves and usually this gives them a wide audience to promote their product to
and gain customers. This is why I set up a tiktok account for our newspaper and
created and edited 3 videos myself to give people a bigger insight into our finished
product via a short video. In the bio of the tiktok account I added the link to our
digital magazine so whoever clicked on our account and was intrigued they would be
able to also read the magazine easily. I edited all the videos via tiktok itself and used
the editing features tiktok has.

Evaluation and reflection
During this project I made 2 newspaper double page spreads, one which was my own design and layout and the other was a template made by our group. This was to ensure that we would have two separately made magazines, one to be fitting a theme and another to be all different and our own creative idea for layout and design. Overall I am proud of the outcome of both magazines however there is definitely room for improvement. One of the things which I think could be improved is my layout. I need to learn how to lay magazine articles out in a more presentable way. For example when it comes to the text and where it is placed I could use borders to make it more spread out and evenligned. Another thing which has room for improvement is having a stricter colour scheme. My first double page spread has many different colours which, yes is appealing to an audience however it looks quite clustered and due to this it may draw some viewers away. One of the things which I am most proud of during this project is my photography, I like how my photographs fit in with the color scheme and topic of my article especially with the joint magazine page. I also really like my road picture which I used and how I layered over the text of the photo which aligned with the road markings.
In regards to software I have learnt how to use Adobe InDesign better, I learnt about hyphenation on text and why it’s important to remove it from text. Alignment is important because if nothing is aligned with how it’s supposed to then the magazine doesn’t look neat and you can tell it hasn’t been thought through, making it look unprofessional. For my newspaper I used Adobe InDesign to edit and create it. Regarding my photographs included in my 2 page spreads I took them on my phone and edited them with different softwares ie Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Mix and vsco.
In terms of marketing I have learnt how much it costs to get printing done for a magazine and the process behind it. This will help me in the future because I now understand the marketing industry better. This is the same for advertising and when it comes to promoting a product. For promotion I made a tik tok account where I made 3 short videos to give people a visual insight into the magazine. I chose the platform tiktok because I believe it’s a very good place to promote small businesses or any company because of its popularity.
In conclusion throughout this project I have completed 2 magazine articles which I would say have been a success. This has gained me new skills and knowledge regarding marketing, advertising, indesign etc.
LJ Hugs project
My chosen area for the LJ Hugs project is to create something along with their logo to draw new people into their restaurant. I thought a good way to gain more customers for them would be to advertise themselves via posters and visual things for example balloons which people will be able to see while walking across town. They are very online orientated and I thought including posters outside on the streets would give people an insight into their food and balloons outside their hut. This would mean they would hopefully get more customers because more people would know about them and be intrigued. There are many tourists in Bath and some may not understand what the LJ Hugs street food is, so having more visual things representing them outside their restaurant and just around town may be a good way to get more customers. An idea I thought of was including balloons outside their restaurant with their logo. Balloons can attract children who will attract their parents to go over to their restaurant.
LJ Hugs history and information
Lj Hugs is located in the centre of Bath as seen below on the map.

They are cajun cuisine specialists and are crazy about their meats. They incorporate their cajun food with a modern take. The ingredients they use are all natural, freshly cooked and ethical. Their prices vary from £2-£7 and every meal comes with a salad and fries. Their target audience varies but as they are based in Bath that is where most of their sales come from. I would like to attract a target audience of students to their restaurant because they are reasonably priced and are located very close to Bath College. Any passers by should also be their target audience and tourists who may be visiting because people walking and shopping get hungry. They are the perfect quick stop to grab a bite to eat for anyone passing them in Bath.
STREET FOOD MOOD BOARD

5 P’s
Product - Street food promoter:
Balloons - promoting social medias ie twitter, instagram and their logo
Posters - promoting their name and logo so people are familiar with it
Leaflets - more information
Visual menu - more bright and colourful, highlighting key points
Price - Balloons free
Meal deals - for example tesco meal deals are £3, snack, drink and main included and is widely popular amongst students and the general public. I noticed Lj Hugs do a similar scheme however for £6 including a main, fries, salad and a drink. This could be promoted more on a poster or on social media to attract more people to let the public know they do deals.
People - TA younger audience ie teenagers and young adults however also anybody who may be passing by is also included in the TA. Children will be attracted to balloons, then attracting adults. Giving away balloons to children may create more customers to try LJ’s food.
Place - Bath, in town next to Mcdonalds and Greggs 2 competitors meaning advertisement and promotion is vital. Mcdonalds is extremely popular amongst the general public due to its name and deals. This is similar to Greggs, they are easy to access and get something quick to eat while also not being expensive. Lj Hugs however has an advantage now because of covid, being served outside may be the safest way to go as people may want to avoid going inside buildings for their own safety.
Promotion - To attract more customers to LJ Hugs
To create more merchandise for their business
My products are going to be visual ‘merchandise’ to attract customers to LJ Hugs and for the name of their restaurant to get more out there and known to the public and people of Bath. They are a very online based business however I believe they will attract many more customers having print based things promoting themselves too especially if placed around southgate, the train station, bus station etc students and all sorts of different people will see these visuals and hopefully the name LJ Hugs will stick and they will come try the food out for themselves. The prices at LJ Hugs are ideal for anyone as they aren’t too pricey, especially students, this is also ideal for anybody passing who wants to grab something quickly to eat but doesn't want to walk in anywhere, maybe their in a rush to catch the bus LJ Hugs is located right on the pathway to the bus and train station. I believe if they had flyers and signs pointing to their stall they would attract more customers too. They are in a perfect set location and have many customers already visiting them. I want to bring them even more.

Street food amongst teenagers and young people research
A street food survey was done and sent to 847 individuals which were randomly selected from different highschools and universities. 43.4% were male and 56.6% were female. The majority of these students were between the ages of 19-22 years of age. This research showed that 40.1% of the youngsters ate street food 2-3 times a week, however 23.3% ate it everyday.
Another article stated that 16-24 year olds spend more money on food than any other age group. Their research reveals this is due to the fact this age group knows so little about cooking so this causes young people to be the leader in spending money on food, spending an average of £63.65 a week compared to adults spending a typical £57.30. Much of this cost comes from takeaways and eating out the independent states. On average young people spend £19.61 on takeaways whereas the adults average is £11.31 and £3.20 for over 65s. Young people also spend an average of £28.26 eating in cafes and restaurants, whereas adults will typically spend £17.22.
I researched how to market and promote a food place to attract more customers. I found a variety of different ways such as:
- Yearly promotions - discounts
- Hold giveaways
- Advertise special days with special products - secret menu?
- Review service daily
- Uploading pictures of food online on website, instagram etc
- Have a screen of positive feedback from customers displayed
- Engage with loyal customers - vouchers, discounts, loyalty card
- Have an app for your food
- Promote location of the place on social media
- Music
To have a successful running business in the food industry many requirements are needed to be made to keep customers coming and satisfied. Having reviews on the food not only by industry experts and other chefs but also by the general public and your own customers. This is important because it allows people who do not know about the restaurant, food vendor to be able to see feedback from others who have already eaten there giving them an insight into the quality of the food and service. Providing this on social media and asking customers to give feedback will be extremely useful for future benefit to be able to grow and improve. This could be done via surveys, questionnaires or even simply asked when serving customers.
A good way to keep customers coming back to buy more could be done by loyalty cards. Allowing loyalty cards will mean that people will want to spend their money on a specific food choice because it will be cheaper than another place who may not do discounts. Special days with special products could also be an idea to keep people engaged with the food and make them want more because it’s constantly changing and not always the same products.
I carried out primary research via a questionnaire amongst teenagers and found out that the majority 75% are not familiar with street food and are more drawn to fast food because of its popularity. 60% said their usual place to eat out when in town would be fast food. This means that businesses which are in the street food industry need to promote and push their products more amongst teenagers as they are an ideal place for students to grab some food to eat while on their lunch break. 80% said they would normally eat somewhere they already know whereas 20% said they would go somewhere different. This proves that having good promotion and regular changes to a food market will attract customers and it is vital because according to my survey people prefer to eat somewhere they are already familiar with. This is why I think it would be good to have different forms of visuals outside LJ Hugs street food vender because they have a big competitor right next door to them, Mcdonalds. If they pushed discounts, visuals outside ie balloons, posters etc it could help them attract more customers and students. Potentially even creating a special discount only for students to make their place more attractive than Mcdonalds for example.
